Before You Begin
Cloning creates an editable copy of an existing handout without changing the original. This is useful when a school or district wants to begin with a handout already configured by Forefront or shared by a peer school or district, making small adjustments to the handout.
At the bottom of this support article, you'll find linked sample handouts/letters used to communicate student performance on the USNS assessments for first grade. These letters are personalized with student results. Schools and districts may modify the header, introductory language, resources shared, and much more. Note that once those changes are made, district leaders may also want to replace the original handout in relevant courses so that educators consistently use the customized version.
Clone a Handout
Navigate to Resources.
Open the folder that contains the handout you want to customize.
Right-click the handout.
Select Clone.
Choose the folder where the new copy should be saved.
Select Clone.
By default, the handout may be cloned into your personal folder. Select a shared school or district folder when other users will need access to the customized version.
After cloning, open the new handout and review the breadcrumb trail to confirm that it was saved in the intended location.
Modify the Cloned Handout
The cloned handout retains the content and configuration of the original, including dynamic text and conditional content.
Dynamic text automatically inserts information such as student or assessment details. Conditional content appears only when a student’s results meet the criteria configured for that section.
You can make smaller changes directly within the cloned handout, including:
Revising or adding local language
Copying and pasting existing district content
Adding a school or district logo
Adding links or QR codes
Updating other text, images, or resources
Add an Image
Place your cursor where the image should appear.
Select the plus sign.
Choose Image.
Select the image from your resources.
Use the image settings to adjust its alignment or placement.
For example, you may add a school or district logo to the first page of a family letter.
Add a QR Code
Place your cursor where the QR code should appear.
Select the plus sign.
Choose QR Code.
Enter the link and any accompanying text.
Add the QR code to the handout.
QR codes can connect families to district information, mathematics resources, or other supporting materials.
For more extensive changes, review the Handouts Expert Coaching module to learn about dynamic text, conditional content, and the full capabilities of the handout editor.
Rename the Customized Handout
Rename the cloned handout so that users can distinguish it from the original.
Include identifying information such as the district, school, assessment window, or purpose. A clear name can help prevent educators from accidentally selecting the original version.
Replace the Handout in a Course
After customizing the handout, add it to the appropriate course or courses.
Open the course.
Scroll to the documents and handouts section.
Remove the original handout when it should no longer be used.
Select the customized handout.
Add it to the course.
Removing the original version can reduce confusion and help ensure that educators consistently use the school- or district-approved handout.
When a course contains many resources, use folders and subfolders to organize related documents and handouts.
Review Before Sharing
Before making the handout available to educators or families:
Confirm that the correct version was added to each course.
Review all customized text, links, images, and QR codes.
Confirm that dynamic and conditional content still displays as intended.
Preview the handout using a student record when possible.
