Introduction to Forefront for New Teachers

These resources provide brief introductions to the teacher experience within Forefront.

This 5-minute video introduction introduces teachers new to Forefront to the platform and first tasks:

Forefront helps teachers enter, review, and use classroom assessment results. The specific instructional programs, assessments, and resources available in your account will depend on your district’s Forefront configuration.

This article provides an introduction to:

  • Navigating your classroom overview

  • Finding program and student performance

  • Entering assessment data

  • Using results for instruction, collaboration, and family communication

Start from the classroom overview

After logging in to Forefront, select Classes from the left-hand navigation menu.

Use the menus at the top of the page to select the appropriate:

  1. Class

  2. Subject

Your classroom overview provides a high-level view of student performance across the assessments available for your class. Learn more about how to look at class-level data.

As data is entered, results will be color-coded to help you quickly identify patterns in student understanding. The performance categories and assessments displayed will vary based on your district’s configuration.

Note: If a class, subject, or instructional program is missing, contact your school or district Forefront administrator or email [email protected].

Find program-specific assessments and results

Select an instructional program tab to view program-specific results. Depending on the program, you may be able to select a specific unit, module, or assessment window.

You can use these pages to identify:

  • Class-wide patterns

  • Students who may need additional support

  • Skills that may require more instruction

  • Areas of strength across the class

View an individual student profile

Student profiles provide a more detailed view of an individual student’s assessment history and performance.

Select a student’s name from a classroom or program page to open the student profile. Learn how to look at student-level data.

The profile can help you examine a student’s results across assessments and prepare for instructional planning, collaborative meetings, or conversations with families.

Enter scores in the gradebook

Many assessments use a spreadsheet-style gradebook for data entry. Interview-based assessments generally use the interview tool for data entry, which is covered in the next section. Digital assessment results can also be imported. Learn more about imports.

To enter scores:

  1. Open the appropriate instructional program or assessment system.

  2. Select the unit, module, or assessment period.

  3. Open the assessment.

  4. Enter each student’s score in the corresponding field.

Confirm the Assessment Date

When you enter the first score, Forefront will ask you to select the date the assessment was administered. This is an important step, as the assessment date can affect proficiency calculations and how results are displayed over time. Learn more about Forefront's proficiency calculation here.

The date can be changed later if needed.

Use the interview tool

Interview-based assessments may be administered and scored directly within Forefront. To open the interview tool:

  1. Navigate to the appropriate assessment.

  2. Select a student.

  3. Open the interview view.

  4. Follow the displayed prompt.

  5. Select the score that best represents the student’s response.

The interview tool may include scoring descriptions or additional guidance to support consistent administration. When available, consult the assessment’s scoring guide for more detailed scoring criteria and examples.

Review class performance

After entering scores, navigate to the reporting suite, or view classroom and program specific visualizations. These results can support:

  • Classroom instructional planning

  • Grade-level or department meetings

  • Professional learning communities

  • MTSS conversations

Share family letters

Family letters provide a teacher-friendly way to communicate assessment results.

To download letters:

  1. Open Documents and select the appropriate handout.

  2. Choose the students whose letters you want to generate.

  3. Preview the letters.

  4. Download or print the completed documents.

Family letters may include a summary of assessed skills, individual results, and information intended to help families understand the assessment. Learn more about family letters.

Access professional learning

Districts can access embedded professional learning through Forefront. Select Professional Learning from the left-hand navigation menu to view the courses available in your account. Learn more about online courses.
